6th April 2004
Windsurfing: Hillhead Wind Direction: NW Wind Stength: 17-22 knots Surf / Sea State: Choppy Air Temperature: A bit nippy (10ºC) Sea Temperature: A bit nippy (9ºC) Weather: April showers Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Wasn't sure if I should work or go out today, but probably the last of the
wind for a while so chose the windsurfing option. Went to the usual launch
spot but it was looking very marginal. Saw some people out further upwind.
Drove up to the sailing club....still marginal, no-one out there. Drove a
bit further up the road to Meon....woohoo! Wind and 4 or 5 people out.
(this must be the launch spot that the guy I met back in November told me
about that works best in a NW)
Thought the 6m would be right and it was....just, after flattening it right
off. Had trouble again keeping the big board on the water. Sort of wishing
my bigger board was something a bit smaller now, since it's often too big
for 6m weather. Not a great session, just blasting back and forth trying to
keep the board under control, bit of a struggle. Was often wishing I was
out on the Quattro and 5.2, would have been much better for most of the
time. Gybing was OK but not great, dropped a fair few. Also was lacking in
energy for some reason and generally not all that up for it.
Noticed an ice-cream van on the shore (is it summer yet?!?). So came in
after about an hour and a half for a an energy boost, with the intention of
going out again. The guy in the van chatted to me for ages though (he
seemed a bit bored), and by the time he had finished I was getting cold
from standing around in my wetsuit. Then a big squally hail storm passed
over which removed any remaining motivation I had to go out again.
Not a great session but at least I got out and the wind was good so it just
about scrapes 3 stars.
